Can you see how an outfit looks on you without changing clothes? Yes. With a virtual try-on, you add a full-body photo of yourself, pick a piece from your digital wardrobe, and AI shows you wearing it in a few seconds. istlook added this to its outfit suggestions screen as Virtual Try-On, and it works with the clothes you already own, not a catalog of strangers' pieces. Below is the whole flow step by step, what to do for the best result, and a few ways to use it before you get dressed in the morning.
What Is a Virtual Try-On for Outfits?
Most people have seen virtual try-on for makeup shades or glasses frames, where a filter lays a product over your face. An outfit try-on does something harder: it takes a photo of you and a photo of a garment and generates a new picture of you wearing it. The useful part is not perfection, it is speed. In a few seconds you can check whether a color works with your skin tone, whether a skirt and a sweater look balanced together, or whether a piece you are thinking of buying suits the rest of your closet.
In istlook the try-on lives next to the other outfit tools. Tap Suggestions in the bottom menu to open the Outfit Suggestions screen and you will see four tabs for building a look: Manual, Smart, Quick Tips and Virtual Try-On. The first three plan outfits from your wardrobe, and the last one shows you wearing them. If you are new to the app, our guide to the istlook digital wardrobe and outfit planner covers the basics first.
The Virtual Try-On tab: the How It Works card explains the three steps. Upload or take your own photo, select a top and a bottom, and see it on you in seconds with AI.
Step 1: Add a Photo of Yourself
The first step is your photo, and it is the one that matters most. Tap Upload Photo and you can take a new picture with Take Photo or pick one with Choose from Gallery. The Select Model Photo sheet gives a short tip first, under Tips for Perfect AI Try-On: stand straight with your arms at your sides, either full body or waist-up, and choose a well-lit photo that shows your torso clearly instead of a close-up face selfie. The AI needs to see where a top ends and a bottom begins, so a clean, front-facing photo gives the most believable result.
The Select Model Photo sheet reminds you how to stand and what kind of picture works best
A few habits make a big difference. Use even daylight or a well-lit room so your outline is easy to see, stand against a plain wall if you can, and wear fitted basics such as a plain tee and leggings so nothing bulky hides your shape. Once the photo is added, it appears in a large frame under Your Photo, and a small swap button in the corner lets you change it if the first one is not right. When you are happy with it, tap Continue.

Step 2: Pick the Pieces You Want to Try
After Continue, the app shows your closet as a grid of pieces. The How It Works card suggests starting with 1 top and 1 bottom, and the app also lets you tag pieces as one-piece or dress, outerwear or shoes, so you are not limited to a single pair of items. Tap a piece to select it and a pink check mark appears, which makes it easy to see exactly what the AI will use.
Two buttons at the top of the grid, Take a photo and Choose from gallery, let you try something that is not in your wardrobe yet. This is handy for a jacket you are considering or a skirt a friend lent you. When you add a photo this way, the app asks What is this item? and offers Tops, Bottoms, One-piece / dress, Outerwear and Shoes. A note under the question says the item is used only for this try-on and won't be added to your wardrobe, so you can experiment without cluttering your closet.

Pieces added from the gallery are tagged as Tops, Bottoms, One-piece / dress, Outerwear or Shoes, and are used only for this try-on
Step 3: Tap Try On and See the Result
When your pieces are selected, tap Try On. A short loading screen says AI is dressing you up, and in a few seconds your result appears full screen. In the example below, the photo showed a woman in a gold sequin mini skirt, black turtleneck, sheer tights and ankle boots. After selecting a black leather skirt, the result kept the same turtleneck, tights, bag and pose and swapped only the skirt. That is the pattern to expect: the AI changes the piece you chose and tries to leave the rest of the photo alone.
The result screen is labeled New Outfit and has four options: Share, Save to Gallery, Post to Feed and Try a Different Outfit. Share and Save to Gallery are useful for asking a friend which version looks better, and Try a Different Outfit takes you straight back to your closet to pick another piece. Virtual try-on runs on AI credits, and a badge at the top of the screen shows how many you have left. In the test shown here, one try took the balance from 98 to 97. Free accounts start with a small number of credits and Premium adds monthly credits, so check the current plans in the app before you plan a big experiment.

Your Try-Ons Are Saved as Avatars
After a try, the picture stays on the screen as a card labeled with the type of piece you changed, which is Bottoms in our example. These saved cards are your avatars, so you can come back to a look later without starting over. Tap a card to open it full screen. The Create New Avatar button at the bottom lets you start a fresh one from a different photo, for example a full-length picture for dresses and a waist-up picture for tops.

Five Ways to Use Virtual Try-On
The tool is most helpful when you use it for decisions, not just for fun. Here are five easy uses.
First, check a color pairing before you commit. If you are not sure whether a burgundy cardigan works with grey jeans, try it. Our guide to what to wear with baggy jeans has ideas that are easy to test this way.
Second, plan an event outfit the night before. If you are choosing between a satin slip dress and a sequin skirt, try both and save the one you prefer. The Christmas party outfit ideas are a good place to start.
Third, test a layer over what you already wear. A coat changes the whole silhouette, so see a puffer jacket or a trench coat over a favorite outfit before the cold weather arrives.
Fourth, judge a possible purchase. Take a photo of the item in a store or from a product page, add it as a one-off piece, and see how it sits with your closet. Because it is not added to your wardrobe, nothing needs cleaning up afterward.
Fifth, build a week of looks. Once you have a few favorites, save the combinations you like and plan them on your calendar, so the morning decision is already made. For more ideas on styling a single statement piece, see our sweater dress outfit ideas.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you try on clothes virtually with istlook?
Tap Suggestions in the bottom menu, open the Virtual Try-On tab, add a photo of yourself, select a piece from your closet or your gallery and tap Try On. The AI shows you wearing it in a few seconds, and you can share the result or save it to your gallery.
What kind of photo works best?
A bright, front-facing photo where you stand straight with your arms at your sides. A full-length or waist-up picture works well, and a close-up face selfie does not give the AI enough to work with.
Does a piece I pick from my gallery get added to my wardrobe?
No. Pieces added from your camera or gallery for a try-on are used only for that try-on and are not saved to your digital wardrobe.
Is virtual try-on free?
It runs on AI credits. Free accounts include a small number of credits, and Premium adds more every month along with extra credit packs. Plans can change, so check the app for the latest details.
Is istlook available on iPhone and Android?
Yes. istlook is available on the App Store and on Google Play, in English and Turkish.
Add your own pieces to your istlook digital wardrobe, try them on your own photo and save the outfits you love.
A virtual try-on will not replace a mirror, but it takes away most of the guesswork. Add your photo once, pick the pieces you are unsure about and let a few seconds of AI tell you which combination is worth wearing today.
